HANOVER FRIENDS MEETING
The Experience of Quaker Worship
Quakers, or Friends, worship as individuals at any time or in any place, and we seek the power and strength which corporate worship affords us in our Meetings for Worship. Our practice is to worship in silent expectation and through spoken words. There is no appointed mimister and no pre-arranged program. As Friends center down together in silent community, we await the consciousness of the Divine Presence, trying to clear our hearts and minds in order to surrender to and listen to that omnipresent voice.
The ability to be open to the Light within is not an easy process; it takes time and experience. Out of the silence may come spoken ministry, a prayer, or sometimes a song. Rufus Jones speaks of a creative quiet. Thomas Kelly reminds us that the words should not break the silence, but continue it; the divine Light ministers both in words and in the silence. On rare and wonderful occaisions, Friends experience what is known as a Gathered Meeting when our awareness of each other in the deepening silence and in the shared power of prayer is overwhelming. It reaffirms our deep belief in the living presence of God among us.
When God speaks it is as an instrument of God's will, an inner message we are compelled to share. After a generous measure of quiet, another may rise to speak. Although the messages may relate to one another in subtle ways, they do not constitiute a discussion or commentary. The most helpful ministry is brief and not overly personal. A period of silence following each message allows us to dwell upon its meaning. A meeting for worship may be held without vocal ministry; inspiration may come through silence, as well.
During worship, one may experience a deep sense of communion with the divine and with all gathered in the meeting, or may find oneself distracted by thoughts and worries. Even if you spend the whole hour trying to set aside worldly concerns to find the still, spiritual center, you have been part of the seeking after paece, simplicity and God for which we gather.
The Meeting for Worship is the center of our lives. It prepares us to go forth into the world to enact a useful and fulfilling life in that spirit of holiness to which we aspire. We recognize that we do not always succeed, but that the power to continue seeking will remain.
We welcome all who come to join us in that search.
