HANOVER FRIENDS MEETING

A BRIEF HISTORY

Quakerism was founded in England in the 17th century by George Fox, who was supported in his ministry by Margaret Fell and others. Early Friends sought and found direct experience of Christ and of the Bible, rather than relying on the formalism of the established church.

Friends are led by Quaker guidelines, called Advices, Queries, and Testimonies, found in our books of Faith and Practice. A great diversity of beliefs exists within and between meetings. Quaker practices are varied as well. Friends are united by faith in the immediate experience of God, often called the Inner Light or "that of God within". We seek a continuing revelation of the religious experience, and believe in the necessity of testing the leadings of the Holy Spirit within the community of the meeting.
